Have you ever been inspired to work in the grand scale of paintings hanging in museums? Figure painter Timothy Rees will lead students through the mechanics of executing large figure paintings, from conception of idea to execution. Students will be provided a large stretched canvas (which can be rolled and shipped after the workshop), as well as extra-large brushes. After watching a demonstration each morning, students will work for five days to execute a painting that is five feet or larger. All styles are welcome, and the main focus will be in planning, setting up the model, positioning the model and canvas to view everything in the correct perspective, painting on a large scale, and more. Class size is limited to 10 students. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to paint the size of the Old Masters!

In the tradition of masters like Sargent and Zorn, students will be presented with the idea of conservation of brushstrokes.  Simplification in a painting is key, and this class challenges students to embrace this philosophy by executing a painting in minimal brushstrokes. The first day will include a slideshow, lecture, and demonstration.  The second day will have students painting a still life with 50 brushstrokes, and the third session will have students painting a portrait in 50 brush strokes using a reference by John Singer Sargent.  By the end of the class, students will be able to create powerful, bold paintings, successfully combining realism with looseness.

Using the basic principles of drawing, students will learn how to master any subject matter. This class is open to beginning, intermediate, and advanced students who want to learn how to effectively capture their subject in charcoal. Students will also learn the fundamentals of strong measuring techniques and how to apply them to create realistic rendering of light and form. Improving drawing skill leads to stronger artwork and more realistic paintings. The first class will cover materials in detail, an introduction to master copies, and plenty of demonstrations. Each class will also begin with a series of quick sketches to warm up.

Few things are as enchanting as a portrait painted in "The Grand Manor" - direct, loose, and realistic.  This type of painting is typically completed "Alla Prima", or in one session.  One of the great challenges with mastering all prima is learning the process and the timing of each step, as well as completing it with accuracy and looseness.  Utilizing a special process, students in this class will extend the length of time their painting takes to dry, allowing them to slowly master each step of the process while working the paint wet into wet over the course of several weeks.  Students will watch the instructor demonstrate in the beginning of each class, then attempt to execute the same steps with the remainder of each session. By the end of 5 weeks, students will have a clear understanding of how to successfully approach an all prima portrait with bravura!

Classes and Workshops 2017 - 2018

Master the ultimate challenge of painting flesh tones in a portrait! In this class, award winning artist Timothy Rees guides students through both historical systems and observational methods to observe and mix flesh tones while working from a live model. Each day the student will learn a different method and apply it to painting a portrait study alla prima (in one session). Topics covered in this oil painting course will include mixing color, understanding the light, color mixing systems, and even creating luminosity through various methods of paint application. By the end of the course, students will leave with a solid understanding of an approach to achieving believable portrait colors that works best with their method of painting. Take your portraits to the next level and help the colors in your portraits glow!
